Lesson of the Day

Percentages can’t simply be averaged since you have a new base each time. Check the math. If you have $10,000 to start and you lose $5000 in the first year for a -50% return, your new base is $5000. So, you need to earn $5000 in year two (a 100% return) to get to $10,000. Averaging the percentages, you get 25%. [(-50+100)/2] However, your cumulative return is actually 0%. Thus, avoiding early losses on speculative investments is critical, and be careful whenever you hear “average return”.

For the meme about trapping spam callers, that has already been done. Search for the Jolly Roger Telephone Company. While it sounds great in theory, for me the fun wore off after a bit of actually using it. I do recommend people to try it, but recognize that it might not stick for anyone in the long run.
