Unfortunately, the Magic of Compounding Works with Expenses Too

Just a reminder that inflationary measures quoted by the media like CPI are rates of increase. In other words, general prices don’t go down. They just go up at different speeds. Thus, all the inflation from Covid money printing and Biden’s presidency have just established new base levels. In fact, the Federal Reserve’s holy grail of inflationary rates is a 2 percent increase per year, which it has struggled to reach most of its existence, even by its distorted/manipulated measures. In fact, in U.S. history there have only been a few times when prices annually went down by an absolute amount, and they were associated with very deep downturns in the economy such as the Great Depression and housing Great Recession. Unfortunately, this will never change until we stop the cycle of insane government spending and money printing.

I believe that prices DID fall when this country was on a gold standard from the 1870s through 1913. As the currency remained stable, the vast productivity improvements brought about by the industrial revolution, also not being stolen via income and other taxation, resulted in falling prices. Sadly since the existence of the Fed and their currency manipulation and the hidden taxation of inflation, prices have been unable to drop except under the worst of economic circumstances.
Yes, I should have qualified with “since the CPI was created,” which coincidentally was shortly after the Fed was created.
