How easy is it to be a libertarian? It’s great, actually. It’s like being that annoying parent at the kids’ baseball game that does nothing but berate your kid’s coach for making the wrong call, or playing the wrong player, etc etc. Yet, when asked to put his money where his mouth is and step up and coach, he’s all “oh, I can’t do that, I’m too busy.”
Libertarians can’t get elected in any sufficient numbers to get anything done. Shoot, they can’t even get out their message enough that people think of their “party” as anything but the lunatics who want legalized drugs. Yet, the few that do manage to get elected by running as republicans or independents do everything they can to stand in the way of even incremental change for the good, because it’s all or nothing.
Libertarians are exhausting. They are the perpetual political “wish list” and arrogant in their status as the ideal, that will never be reached.
Gee, if I reverse my positions and support pedophilia, bankrupting budgets, increased government size and intrusion, no election integrity, and endless costly wars, can I be one of the cool kids? 🙄 Most libertarians agree the national party is a disaster, so we stick to spreading the same principles that 70-80 percent of the country support and making an impact in elections when we can. Libertarians such as Tucker, Rogan, Smith, Musk, and others mobilized millions to put Trump over the top. Rand Paul and Thomas Massie vote with Republicans 90+ of the time, and if the RINOs even tried to make “incremental” changes such as on permanent DOGE cuts, you can bet they’d vote with the party. They only break on core issues where Republicans are completely breaking promises and betraying their voters.
I’m so envious of you “party before anything else” people who can trash all your principles to compromise with the literal worst people on Earth, because power is all that matters.
Where did I say anything about “party before anything else?” Where did I say blindly support the Republican Party or go pound sand? What I did is identify my irritation with the Libertarians. I explained why, and sadly Joe, you go right to proving my points. The funny thing is, I agree and support many of the libertarian ideals on the domestic front. At the same time, I live in reality and realize that 80% of this country doesn’t give two f*cks about politics. And that is a big part of the reason we are in the predicament we’re in. We can’t make the giant adjustments you and I may believe need to be made. Our country was never designed for that. What chaps my behind about the Massies, Pauls and others is their flat refusal to do anything towards even incrementally bringing the U.S. back to a constitutional standing.
Finally, don’t imply because I find libertarians to be exhausting and at times insufferable, that I am in any way for pedophilia, expanding budgets, or endless “nation building” wars. You’re better than that, Joe. And, btw, the Iranian War has been going on for 47 years, with many American deaths as a result. Trump is the first president who has decided perhaps ENDING it by shooting back is a good idea. First president in 47 years. You’re free to disagree with it. Me? I would just as soon see the leading sponsor of terrorism in the world defanged and irrelevant. I’m tired of Americans dying, and America doing nothing about it but self flagellation.
I enjoy your site overall, Joe. You do a fine job with it.
Ok, fair points. I’ve ran political sites 7+ years without making any money to try to improve things, so I get defensive when people say I “do nothing” but berate the people in charge. I shared hundreds of memes in support of Trump and helped get out the vote for him in 2024. Rand Paul put forth a ton of effort to get libertarians to vote for Trump and a Republican majority. So, Trump’s 180 degree betrayals cannot go unanswered or unresisted.
Both parties are a complete shitshow, and I haven’t given up hope there’s a better independent option out there if we wake enough people up. More than 2/3 of country already want a 3rd party, so anything is possible.
