It’s Speculation and Market Manipulation, Not Investing

As I’ve mentioned in past blogs, precious metals are a decent hedge against inflation since they’ve been accepted as a money equivalent for thousands of years, you can’t “print” more of it, and they have at least some inherent value. However, just like bitcoin and government currencies, most of the value is based on perception of value, not inherent worth. The recent meteoric rise of silver prices is a great example. Nothing significant changed in the inherent worth of silver in recent months. Investors are simply desperate to find a reliable storage of value that won’t evaporate in the face of insane government spending and money printing. In addition, the financial media and bloggers are doing much of the same pump’n’dump selling they did with cryptocurrencies.
It’s a story as old as time. Here’s a little known fact: the original Wizard of Oz story was an allegory about the business environment and monetary debates of the 1890s. Dorothy represented the innocent American looking for answers. Oz was symbolic of the monetary unit of an ounce. The Yellow Brick Road represented the gold standard, which many saw as the path to prosperity. Dorothy’s slippers were made of silver (the movie changed it to ruby) to show the writer’s solution to the monetary crisis. The Scarecrow represented less educated rural Americans (i.e. needing “brain” power), the Tin Man as “heart”-less American industry that needed oil to expand. The Cowardly Lion represented certain politicians who were portrayed as lions to the public, but whose actual actions were cowardly. The Wizard represented the President, supposedly the one with the solutions to all their problems, and the man behind the curtain as the unseen forces who controlled the Wizard. The Wicked Witch represented the malevolent Ruling Class and obstacles to prosperity, with the flying monkeys the secondary forces mindlessly doing its bidding. The munchkins represented simple folk oppressed by monopolies and financial institutions, afraid to understand or confront the fairy tale evil that kept them down.
See any parallels with the world we live in today? 🤔

Just wondering if maybe some of the rise in the price of silver has to do with AI. Silver, after all is one of the best conductors of electricity, and AI is supposed to increase demand for electricity substantially.
Excellent point, Kevin. I think the initial price surge was related to its importance in AI components, especially when the U.S. Interior designated it a critical element. That’s investing. However, the price doubled over the past month alone. That’s speculation and mania.
Thanks for the detailed analysis of the REAL story behind the Wizard of Oz. Rare to find it. I share it with folks often. That everyone around during the creation of the Fed, the old gold standard, etc is dead, is part of the reason the lies have such greater impact these days. Thanks as always for the education.
