Lesser of Two Evils

As we watch far-left leaders like Mamdani continue to gain power, the tried-and-true fallback is that we must shut up and vote Republican because the other side is worse!
Yes, we must rack up trillions of new debt each year, continuing us on a path to Weimar-like hyperinflation, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must cover up for hundreds of pedophiles, and allow our politicians to be controlled by their blackmailers, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must continue supporting neverending wars and start new ones, causing potentially millions of deaths, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must expand Deep State power structures, implement digital ID, and increase monitoring of our personal lives, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must add new taxes on imported goods that will eventually make their way into price increases, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must cheer on unhinged personal attacks on whoever disagrees with the President, including his own voters, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must support corrupt, lifelong politicians who always vote the party line, and try to destroy Republicans who call for common sense solutions, because the other side is worse.
Yes, we must excuse companies, scientists, and government officials responsible for millions of Covid deaths, who cost trillions of economic damage, because the other side is worse.
The sad thing is the Left is indeed worse on almost all of the above, but the answer is not to just bite our tongues, hold our noses, and continue to vote for these kind of Republicans. Is our goal to compromise all our principals so the party that’s only 97% as bad as the other maintains power?
Most parties, especially the Libertarian Party, have often been too incompetent to ever gain a foothold, despite the fact a large majority of Americans want a 3rd option. But it’s mainly because way too many of us are obsessed with defeating the awful other side, regardless of how regularly both sides screw us over and break promises. Trump, Johnson, and Thune are about to get shellacked in the midterms, and that sledgehammer message deserves to be sent.
I get it…not voting, or voting 3rd party, helps the Democrats, but the RINOs in charge are simply not responding to citizen anger. Trump has overcome so much over the past 10 years that he think he can say or do anything he wants, and he’ll still maintain his support. He’s about to find out that many of us are now gone behind the point of return.
Voting 3rd party is not likely to win elections anytime soon. However, it does accomplish a few things. First, a movement has to start somewhere, and if the percent reaches a reasonable amount, say 10 percent, it increases people’s willingness to seriously consider 3rd party in future elections, possibly reaching a critical mass that does make election wins viable. If nothing else, though, it sends a message to both parties that concerns of liberty-loving, common-sense Americans cannot be ignored. It puts the spotlight on principled politicians, while exposing the corrupt, compromised swamp creatures currently in charge.
For how much longer are we going to use Einstein’s definition of insanity as our guiding political philosphy?

There will never be a viable 3rd party at a national level. In our winner-take-all election structure, the basic principles of game theory, mathematics, and human behavior ensure this. Short of a cataclysmic event, the two-party system is an extremely stable equilibrium. If this ever changes, it is far more likely to deviate to single-party authoritarian control than to a 3+ party system. What you are advocating here would only increase the likelihood of the Democrats doing just that – packing the court, resuming the mass importation of a dependent voter base, and changing election laws to allow them to (more openly) vote.
As frustrating as the current system is, the solution is not to throw up our hands and start acting irrationally and vindictively against our own interests. Rather, it is to strategically pick our battles and work toward having more libertarian-leaning candidates prevail in primaries (of both major parties). The realistic way of achieving our policy objectives is to have a small handful of libertarian-leaning (R) and (D) candidates function as the critical swing votes in Congress, thereby wielding outsized influence.
John Does observations are spot on. My favorite solution is term limits, we term limit the president but not the congress. 12 years max in HoR and senate total. Another thought would be that all laws passed apply to everyone including members of congress. And how about ending their government pension plan.
You sound so close to how I was 40 years ago. Voting in the 80s for Ron Paul…
I voted Reform party twice (Ross Perot). If you’d ever wondered about his conviction in life, read “On Wings of Eagles” by Ken Follett. He would’ve made a _great_ president.
Imagine what a 10% turnout would say about this country and the citizen support of our government/institutions. FAR more than the huge turnouts for obvious criminals does.
