Total Cost
In considering government subsidies for electric vehicles, health care, day care, or whatever, what matters is the total cost and resources used. Politicians love to pat themselves on the back for “keeping costs down” for one group when they’re simply adding to the cost burden of another group. What makes matters so much worse is that subsidies disincentivize cost-cutting behavior and introduce inefficiences that both add to the total cost burden of society. That’s why the industries with the most government meddling — education, food, energy, housing, and health care — have exploded in cost much faster than the overall CPI inflation rate.
