Lesson of the Day

This is from Google’s own AI bot:

google adsense data harvesting

For those of you who don’t like being tracked or having your data harvested, I’m sorry to say that it’s near impossible when you use the web; that is, unless you use a series of tools popular on the dark web (VPNs, Tor browser, firewalls, etc.). It doesn’t even matter if you avoid Google search engine, Youtube, social media, and other popular data harvesters. Google Adsense is a perfect example why this is true. It involves a little piece of code that almost every website with advertising puts in. Google pays the website owner based on the number of ad clicks, and then in turn receives money from the actual advertisers. Google makes billions every year using this practice, and at the same time, it can harvest your data every time you visit the website.

This is why even if you go directly to a site and search a catalog, you start seeing specific ads on social media and other random sites. For example, if I go directly to a site like Dick’s Sporting Goods and look at running shoes, a few minutes later my Facebook feed is filled with ads for running shoes.

Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, and virtually every popular data harvester follows similar practices, and they share information with each other. Plus, since Alexa, Siri, Cortana, and other AI assistants are listening for commands, I’m guessing a lot of your words are being fed into voice translation data compilers. I’m not sure how they process all that behind the scenes. And yes, it does sound all crazy Big Brothery stuff, but in almost all cases, it’s nothing more than another way to make more money.

  1. My personal opinion on AI is that it’ll be used to send you ads for the next 6 months based on something you bought online last week and don’t need to purchase again for years, if ever.

    • More annoying is when the company you just bought it from does that. And seriously Amazon, who needs a subscription for regular shipments of garden pruning shears??? Stupid humans are programming AI so it will just be as stupid as them (not that this is a good thing).

  2. The real problem is when you just THINK about something and ads start popping….LOL. It’s a BRAVE NEW WORLD we live in. Thanks for the funnies….
