Random Thoughts of the Day
Most of us who’ve worked with difficult people know the term “Pick your battles.” It’s a philosophy where you give in for petty, unimportant issues to build good will and credibility, then save your efforts & energy for the truly important stuff. I once had a co-worker, let’s call him Bob. He had zero understanding of the term, and EVERYTHING was a battle. If he wanted the color blue in pens, he’d use up a 2-hour meeting arguing if you opposed the idea. I remember one incident where we had to choose 1 of 2 programming algorithms. I mentiond the 1st was probably better, which he naturally opposed. It was such a petty issue that I said, “OK, no problem. We can do the 2nd,” after which he immediately started arguing for method 1. It was a waste of time to even try to work with him.
Western politicians and mainstream media are almost entirely made of Bob’s nowadays. They’re so invested in fighting the “other side” that they don’t even stop for a second to think what they’re opposing or supporting. Both the Right and Left follow this operating procedure. I remember a time when Michelle Obama was pushing an initative to make school lunches and vending machines healthier. Of course, the reflexive anti-Obama Right opposed every step. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m against any kind of government intrusion in education, but given that it wasn’t going to change anytime soon, this was not exactly a great time to “pick a battle.” It only made conservatives sound petty while destroying their credibility on issues that really mattered. Fast-forward to 2025. RFK is in the Trump administration and is pushing major changes in health and diet industries. Republicans now almost universally support the initiatives, while Democrats nearly unanimously oppose. Did anything really change, or are both sides pulling the Bob opposition routine? There should be shades of gray in the issue that both sides support or oppose. For example, I support the vast majority of RFK’s health changes, but I’m concerned with government getting involved in the implementation. Are we going to get new expensive agencies that never go away, which set impractical rules for the health and food industry? At a minimum, they’ll likely drive food and medical costs higher. Theoretically, the long-term national health benefits should outweigh the costs, but when has the government ever been concerned with results, or even tried to measure the success at all?!
The reflexive TDS opposition that now dominates the Democratic party has gone beyond parody. They oppose diet/health improvements, oppose government spending controls, oppose border & immigration enforcement, support endless wars, fight for MS-13, oppose ID and citizenship proof for voting, and advocate genetic males beating the crap out of females in their sports. Those are just the tip of the iceberg. Trump is like a pet owner with a laser pointer, watching the cat pounce wherever he guides it. They will oppose ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he proposes, even when he goes point-by-point through their former platform. Don’t forget Trump, Musk, RFK, Tulsi Gabbard, and others in his administration are all former Democrats!
A recent example is Trump’s plan to hold a parade for the nation’s 250th birthday next year. Liberals are “concerned” about the cost and the image of the military marching in such an intimidating display. Sure, right, these ass clowns have opposed 100 percent of every DOGE effort to reign in government spending, but they’re suddenly concerned about the cost of a f–king parade?! 🙄 It’s reminiscent of when they were suddenly fiscal conservatives when Trump wanted $5 billion in 2017 to build a border wall. Oh, and our military marching in a patriotic parade portrays the wrong image, but there’s no problem rubber stamping a $1 trillion dollar annual defense budget, nor constant involvement in endless foreign wars? 👍
As I mentioned in a previous blog, if you’re 100 percent for or 100 percent against, you lose all credibility. But as we’ve seen, it also makes you lose touch with reality and lose sight of what’s really important. it creates a hostile working environment where problems are never solved, or even if they could be solved, your critical thinking has disintegrated in the name of “your side” winning.

I like the fact you used ‘Bob’ for this – it gives a good segway to another point of view. Being a long-time fan of Alton Brown, in the later season of Cutthroat Kitchen, all of his helpers were named Bob. (Yes, even the females. 🙂 ) Whenever there was a physical sabotage to be auctioned, he’d yell “Bob!” (or if multiples, “Bobs!”) to demonstrate and showcase said sabotage. They were sometimes even used to hinder the cooks during the competition, like “Well, the only prep surface you can use is this small table, but the Bobs are trying to finish their novel, so they’ll be using typewriters and shuffling papers on this table as well, while you do your prep.”
So, when it’s Bob’s job to hinder you and make the process harder “just because” it seems quite relatable…
