If private citizens trade on inside information, they face fines, forfeiture of profits, and jail time. Financial professionals likely lose their licenses. Lawyers face disbarment. This includes if you pass on information to relatives or friends, who also face the same kind of penalties. Politicians? Totally legal, and they fight to preserve their rigged game almost as hard as term limits and their lifetime pensions. Government inside information goes way beyond knowledge of upcoming regulatory changes, legislation, executive orders, and so on. It includes military action. It includes all those government numbers released daily on CNBC such as CPI inflation, GDP, unemployment rate, etc. It includes Federal Reserve interest rate decisions and governing board comments. Sometimes all you need is advanced knowledge of policy speeches, which often move markets more than financial data.
This is just in case you’re wondering why politicians can be worth hundreds of millions on a $170k salary. Government is the most lucrative, sure-thing way to make yourself rich. And you don’t even need Biden Crime Family-like bribery to take advantage.
