When the Numbers Are Too Big to Visualize
Do you remember USA for Africa and the song We are the World? That was when Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and dozens more of the greatest musicians in the world came together to raise money for starving Africans. Americans poured in their donations at a time when the country was just starting to come out of the double digit unemployment and inflation caused by the Carter years. About $60 million was raised, equivalent to about $180 million in today’s dollars. Another way to think about is less than 1/5th of $1 billion…for all that effort and publicity.
Keep that number in mind when you hear about tens of billions being wasted on international trans education progams or Sesame Street for terrorists. Over 1000 times that USA for Africa number–yes, 1000 times!!–has been given in Ukraine aid the past 4 years. Over 25,000 times that number was wasted in George W’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Regardless of what you think of the African charities, the point is Western governments aren’t just wasting money, they’re taking away valuable resources that could be put into endless causes, or even better, left into the private sector where it could be invested to grow the world economy to the point that we wouldn’t need to send regular aid packages to all the Third World countries. It always infuriates me when condescending liberals like Chuck Schumer call libertarians selfish for not wanting to pay taxes. No, we’ve just seen the colossal waste examples for so many decades that we have ZERO confidence the money will ever be spent productively or efficiently.
I’m sure most of you have seen this Schumer clip by now, but it so perfectly captures the arrogant, condescending, leftist snobs that infest DC and the rest of the Ruling Class. It should be played regularly in campaign ads the next 4 years.

That Schumer clip has me reaching for my musket and tri-fold hat.
The fundamental attitude is that our money is theirs, and that they know how to spend our money better than we do. Both are obviously 100% FALSE.
Great example wit Live-in and the dollars. The wealth that would still be in the hands of Americans, if not for government, is staggering to imagine.
