Apology NOT Accepted
Random Thoughts of the Day

War is probably the worst thing in human existence. It’s killed and maimed hundreds of millions. It creates endless widows and orphans. It destroys homes and cities, while draining national resources that could be used for food, housing, education, and so much more. It creates a psychological torture, not just for the soldiers and civilians in war zones, but also the people who live in fear of losing a loved one.
Given these facts and all we should have learned from history, why do we still fight wars? Certainly politicians are primarily to blame, but they still need to get potentially millions of people to support this death and destruction. How do they accomplish this year after year? Simple — they get you to hate or fear the enemy. That’s where war propaganda comes in. The enemy must be portrayed as a monster, a threat to freedom and potentially your life. They must be dehumanized, shown to be totally lacking in morals, a kill-or-be-killed choice. War propaganda usually has some truth mixed in with lies and exaggeration.
There haven’t been many wars in history where there have been clearcut good guys and bad guys. The Nazi regime was one of them. Ironically, war propaganda actually caused people to NOT believe the real atrocities that were taking place. You see, World War I was one of those senseless wars where neither side was particularly evil, certainly not enough to justify the slaughter of 15-20 million soldiers and civilians. But to motivate the populations to continue the butchering for so long, both sides waged large scale propaganda campaigns, spreading wild stories portraying the enemies as monsters. After the war, people slowly learned almost all of the propaganda was false. So, when the Nazi regime started slaughtering millions of Jews and committing other atrocties, most of the world simply didn’t believe it.
Notwithstanding the Nazi regime, most wars throughout history have misunderstandings and shades of gray rather than simply good against evil. Ego, power, greed, and other factors drive politicians to start wars, but to get the people to go along with it, they need to cement that hate and fear through dehumanization of the enemy. This is why I’m skeptical of everything I read on both sides of the Ukraine-Russia war, and it’s yet another reason why in world conflicts, the best path is just to not get involved.
