Random Thoughts of the Day

One of the many ways government perverts the language is its definition of a “cut.” Government defines a cut as a reduction in the growth rate of spending rather than an absolute amount. For example, if an agency spent $10 billion in year 1, increased to $12 billion in year 2, then increased to $13 billion in year 3, politicians and media lapdogs would define this as a cut in that agency’s funding, even though the absolute amount increased. For starters, we have to start calling them on this. Second, if we simply just froze government spending levels in all areas, because of inflation and economic growth, the annual budget would move close to balanced in 5-10 years just on that step alone.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not proposing this as the only solution to the budget deficit. We need drastic real cuts across the board to get the financial house in order. Unfortunately, Congress is dominated by weak, corrupt cowards who don’t have the political will to make sensible cuts. Freezing the growth of spending might actually get passed in the DC cesspool, so maybe start there as we work to weed out the career politicians and finally get some real progress.

Btw, I have a cute black and white female mutt named Karma. Sometimes she lives up to the name.
