Random Thoughts of the Day
A big reason the national debt is so out of control is the use of one-time “emergency” spending packages. They’re almost always colossal wastes of money that add to total debt, but even worse, EVERY TIME one of these packages is passed, it establishes a new annual baseline spending level. For example, say the annual budget is $3 trillion, but then a “one-time” aid package is passed for $1 trillion. In the following year, the annual spending will start at $4 trillion and increase from there in perpetuity. This is precisely what happened when Bush passed the TARP financial bailout, after which Obama increased spending from the new baseline all 8 years in office. After Trump’s passage of the Covid emergency package, Biden not only increased the baseline by that package, but added another one on top of that in 2021. Spending subsequently increased from there in 2022-2024. All that spending goes hand-in-hand with bloated government, with every agency anxious to spend every cent possible to avoid a possible budget cut in the future.
It took 224 years of American history to reach a spending level of $2 trillion annually. That included a Civil War, two world wars, and a Great Depression. In the 25 years since then, spending has gone from $2 trillion annually to over $7 trillion now. Granted, some of that is devaluation of the U.S. dollar. However, spending increases always far outpace the rate of inflation. The path is unsustainable, so DOGE and the handful of fiscal conservatives in Congress must do their work, regardless of how much resistance and crying they encounter.
