Since I started an education website, I obviously think education is important. It’s probably the most important area to allocate societal resources after basic necessities like food, shelter, and energy. However, look at the results when government gets involved in this process. Public statistics are usually a year behind, so 2025 numbers will likely be much higher in todays inflationary, labor-shortage environment. With modern technology and all the free/low-cost education on the web, total education spending should be plummeting, not increasing at a rate greater than the overall CPI inflation rate. The average textbook costs about the same as a full year’s access to sites like Coursera, Great Courses Plus, and LinkedIn Learning. Khan Academy, this website, and countless others are completely free.

What if teachers ran 10-student home schools with the $18,000 x 10 = $180,000 allocation? And $30,000+ per public university student?! When I was in college, over half my professors were so bad that I taught myself all the material. Many did nothing more than give a few lectures per week and pay an assistant to run scantron tests through a machine a few times a semester. Now, a large percentage of public classes are fully online, meaning there’s no cost of physical facilities other than possibly hosting computer servers.

Like all government organizations, no matter how much money you give them, they will find a way to spend it. And they’ll NEVER let their budgets dip below the full allocation for fear of getting them cut in the future. Education spending per student in the U.S. dwarfs any other country in the world, yet academic rankings can’t even make the top 25 in most subjects. Maybe it’s time do try something different? 🤔

  1. This is pretty much unrelated to the article. I’m 70. I was using a walker in the local grocery store. A younger guy gave me a hard time. I told him I hoped he didn’t get old.
