Lesson of the Day
I’m guessing many of you have New Year’s resolutions of getting lean and fit in 2025. A good start would be to learn of the many ways food manufacturers deceptively advertise their products. Here’s just one example. Check out how this ground turkey packages is advertised:

A logical, intuitive assumption is that you’re getting only 7 percent of your calories from fat, while the other 93% is lean protein. However, the 7 percent is actually a measure of weight, and fat molecules are jammed packed with calories. So, you have to look a little deeper:

A good formula to remember is 9 times the number of fat grams. That tells you how many total fat calories per serving. If you divide the total calories by the overall total per serving, you get a true percent fat. In this example, 8g * 9 calories/gram = 72 calories. Divide that by the total serving calories (72/170) gives you a total of 42.4% fat. In other words, of the 680 calories in the package, roughly 288 of them are pure fat. Does it still sound “lean” to you? Food manufacturers are constantly manipulating weights, servings sizes, and more. If they can get the serving sizes ridiculously low, they might even be able to slap a “sugar-free” or “fat-free” label, which the FDA defines as less than .5 grams per serving. Get the picture?
